I am writing to generate support for the article “No zombies allowed at FGCU’s Zombiefest” published on Oct. 27. I believe the stance taken by FGCU by not allowing students to cover their faces with zombie makeup was justified to ensure safety. The actions were taken after the recent shooting that occurred in downtown Fort Myers at ZombiCon, which many FGCU students attended.
As an FGCU student and participant at ZombiCon, I understand why changes were made to Zombiefest. I feel an important change was needed to ensure safety after such a traumatizing event. Personally, I felt that the precautions taken made me feel more comfortable with attending. Since events like Zombiefest attract such a large crowd, I think the regulations, such as requiring identification of every attendee and not allowing costumes, was a success because it allowed students to feel safe and still have fun. I feel like the quick actions of the university should be applauded because it did not ignore the fact that many students attended ZombiCon and no longer feel comfortable in crowds of zombies.
Sincerely,
